How to Fit Your Swim Goggles
How to Fit Your Swim Goggles
A good fit is the difference between goggles you forget you're wearing and goggles that leak, fog or hurt. It takes about a minute to get right. Follow the four steps below, then use the seal test and checklist to confirm.
The 4 keys to a good fit
1. Wear the strap at about 45° and not too low
The strap should angle up from the goggles towards the crown of your head, at roughly 45°. If it sits too low on the back of your head, the goggles get pulled down and away from your face, which causes leaks and pressure on your cheeks.
2. Keep the outer edge of the gasket off your cap
Try to avoid having the outer edge of the gasket sitting on top of your swim cap. The gasket needs to seal against skin, so a cap edge underneath it can let water in. Position the cap so it finishes clear of the gasket, or adjust the goggles slightly.
3. Find a comfortable nose bridge size
For models with an interchangeable nose bridge, try the sizes available and choose the one that feels comfortable and sits evenly across your nose without pinching or leaving a gap. The video further down this page shows how to change the nose bridge.
4. Don't over-tighten the strap
The seal comes from the gasket sitting against your face, not from strap tension. Tighten only until the goggles stay in place. Over-tightening can cause headaches, deep marks around the eyes and, surprisingly, more leaking.
Test the seal (for all models except Ghost)
- Hold the goggles to your eyes without the strap.
- Press lightly and let go.
- If they stay on for a second or two, the gasket is sealing well.
If they don't stick, check for hair under the gasket, sunscreen or moisturiser around the eyes, or try a different nose bridge size (if your model has one).
Cap and hair tips
- Make sure no hair is caught under the gasket.
- Adjust the strap one side at a time so the goggles sit centred.
Care and anti-fog
- With NanoClear technology, wet the inside lens and, if needed, give it a rub with your thumb to activate the anti-fog.
- Rinse in fresh water after swimming and let them air dry.
- Store in the case, out of direct sun.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Try this |
|---|---|
| Leaking at the nose | Try a different nose bridge size (if available) and check the seal test. |
| Leaking at the outer edge | Check the gasket isn't sitting over your cap or hair, and that the strap isn't too low. |
| Goggles feel too tight or leave deep marks | Loosen the strap and make sure it's place high enough on your head. The seal doesn't depend on tightness. |
| Goggles slip down | Move the strap up to about 45° on the back of your head. |
| Fogging | Wet the inside lens and rub it with your thumb. |
How to change the nose bridge
On models with an interchangeable nose bridge, you can swap it for a different size.
- Pull the nose bridge out of the eyecup by firmly placing your thumb next to the nose bridge connection and pulling the bridge out.
- Push the bridge end back into the eyecup firmly.
- Check that it is secure and the goggles sit evenly.
How to adjust the strap on your model
Strap adjustment is different on each model. Watch the video for your goggles. Adjust one side at a time, a little at a time, and stop when the goggles feel snug but not tight.
